Grow your own food

Indoor tropicals that are fun and edible

We have a lot of fun growing small fruit bearing tropicals indoors. We put them outside when concern for freezing temperatures is past and they come inside in the winter after they have been pruned back to save room.

My son collected some Kukui Nut seeds when we were in Hawaii. He brought them home and planted them and now we have Kukui Trees in our kitchen. I will let you know if we get nut production.

Growing Herbs

With herbs, a little bit goes a long way and because there are many aggressively spreading herbs, we like to grow them in containers, on our deck, close to the kitchen. Most herbs are easy to grow and selection is per individual preference for cooking. Herbs are an easy and fun way to get started with plants.

  1. I was given some Kukui nuts...How do I go about growing it indoors? I have tried to find information and yours is the first that has shown that it is even possible...Please respond...I know that I cannot grow it outside because of where I live, in the mountains...I would so love to try to grow one...Thank you...

  2. I am sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you. I have not been on my blog much lately. My son suprised us when we got home from Hawaii and he told us he had the Kukui seeds. He was 7 at the time. They are tropical so they require no cool treatment (months in the fridge) I would gently sand paper the hard shell so that moisture can penetrate better, being careful not to hurt the inner seed. This should prompt the seed to germinate. Other than that, put them in a pot with soil and they should thrive. My son just put them in with an existing house plant and they grew. They make great house plants. I hope this helps.
